Faith in Action

"We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own."                                                                                                                                                                                         ~Attributed to Archbishop Oscar Romero

"What we need, each one of us, is to be thrown off balance by the self-sacrificing example of others."
~From the Editors of Commonweal Magazine, April 12, 2013.
The Newman Center offers many opportunities to grow in service to others as well as knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching.  Click on the links below or contact a member of the Social Action Team to find out how!

Jamaica International Immersion

Newman's annual international service immersion trip to Mustard Seed Communities in Montego Bay, Jamaica.  Join us this Spring Break for a different sort of way to enjoy the Caribbean and become part of the Body of Christ at the same time!

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) 2013

Picture
Each year, Newman sends forth five domestic service trips to work and learn alongside the poor and marginalized in various areas around the country. This page includes information for Newman's student-led Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trips, including the current partner organizations and types of volunteer service we do on each trip.

Local Service Opportunities

Picture
Check here for opportunities for Newman students and permanent community members to volunteer in and around the Chapel Hill area.  Some opportunities, like Habitat for Humanity, the IFC Community Kitchen, and G2G (Generation to Generation) occur on a regular basis; others, like the IFC Crop Walk and Annual Newman Service Day, are large gatherings that happen once per year.

Newman's Annual Gala

Friday, February 15th, 2013 at 7:30pm

Every year, Newman students, permanent community members, families, and friends gather for a HUGE party!  The Gala is in support of Newman's domestic and international trips, including the Jamaica International Immersion trip and all domestic Alternative Spring Break trips.  This is a chance to mingle, meet new people, learn about what the community is doing to support our call to promote peace and justice, and enjoy an open bar (don't forget your ID!).

Cuts Cost Lives

A partnership between the United States Bishops, Catholic Relief Services, and Catholics Confront Global Poverty, this video shows the possible impact that irresponsible national budget planning could have on the lives of millions of individuals both locally and abroad.

With sequestration in place, it is more important now than ever to help draw a "circle of protection" around the most vulnerable Americans!

J-Walking (JusticeWalking)

Picture
J-Walking is a program designed by JustFaith Ministries that is entering its second year at the Newman Center. It is a journey in Gospel Living that is similar to Newman's Small Faith Groups, but with a stronger focus on meeting Christ in both the Gospel and the margins of today's society.

Join Lexi Schmidt, Newman's J-Walking co-coordinator, on this semester-long pilgrimage journey!
