Liturgy and Faith Community

WELCOME! The Newman Staff welcomes you to our Newman Center here at the University of North Carolina. We are here to support and serve the many undergraduate students who enter our doors, as well as graduate students and permanent members of our parish. Please let us know how we can help you. We can offer you spiritual guidance, a home-cooked meal, and everything in between!

Baptism

Baptism Preparation Class Monthy on Second Monday or by Appointment
Infant Baptism is normally celebrated during the Eucharistic Liturgy to welcome the child into the Church and community. Parents must be registered members of the Newman community and attend a class in preparation for their child to receive the Rite of Baptism. Godparents are encouraged to attend a preparation class at Newman or their home parish.

Reconciliation

Contact the parish office, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm.

First Reconciliation and First Eucharist

Sacramental preparation for children receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist for the first time is traditionally offered in the second grade. Attendance of one year in the Newman Catechesis Program is required before beginning sacramental preparation. Parents participate in their child’s sacramental preparation by attending catechetical sessions during the year and by supplementing their child’s in class work with a program designed for home use.

Confirmation
Preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation is a two-year process for High School students. Preparation requirements include Christian service, two Confirmation retreats, attendance at all Confirmation sessions, and a willingness to grow in relationship with God and witness to the work of the Holy Spirit in our world today.

Becoming a Catholic

Each year many people want to investigate becoming a member of the Catholic Church. We offer a faith growth process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) that enables an individual to simply inquire into the faith or to become a full member of the Catholic Church. The process begins in September and ends in May. While designed for those wanting to understand Catholicism better or those from other denominations seeking Baptism, RCIA is also open to baptized Catholics who have not been educated in their faith and who desire to prepare for the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.
