Spiritual Growth Opportunities

Good Food. Small Faith Groups. Retreats.

Newman is more than Sunday Mass. It’s a place where every one of us — whether a student or a part of what we call our permanent community — can grow spiritually and socially. We invite you to look over the opportunities summarized below and to participate in as many of them as you wish. Come grow with us.

Small Faith Groups

People of all ages and life experiences are discovering their voice in the Church through small faith groups. These are groups of 5-15 people, gathered around Sacred Scripture to listen to the Word of God, share what they hear, and then ask, "So what? How is God acting in this text and does it make a difference in our lives? Our World" One student says: "The experience helps us connect the gospel to our relationships, our work, our study - to life! My group changed me."

For Lent, Small Faith Groups will welcome new members beginning the week of Ash Wednesday, February 19-26. Registration is available online here and will be open through February 12.

Retreats for Students

Each of us needs time away from pressure, studies, work, the daily grind, time to connect with that deepest part of our selves, the sanctuary where we most fully encounter God. Each year we offer two Awakening retreats, a first year retreat, a men's retreat, a women's retreat, and a senior retreat.

Registration for all retreats can be made through the UNC Newman Center Office: 929-3730. For more information contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The cost of most weekend retreats is $60 or less! This low cost is possible through the support of our benefactors, the permanent community, alumni & parents, who believe in the vital importance of these retreats. Transportation is provided in collaboration with staff, student leaders and retreat participants.

Carolina Awakening 4

Awakening is a retreat that has been given for over 30 years by campus ministries across the country. The retreat addresses faith and life topics such as--  What is Love? What is Faith? What is the Holy Spirit and what is its role in my life? What is prayer and how do I pray? – and still more. Awakening allows students to demonstrate their love for God and one another. It effectively sets the foundations of growing in faith on campus and leaves retreatants with a way to sustain the relationships begun on the retreat.

One student says:  “ Awakening has been one of the most formative experiences I have ever had. It’s been a vital part of my college experience.”
Another says: “It ignited my faith and challenged to me to explore it further upon returning to campus.”

Retreatant registration will be available shortly. Staffer registration is now available upon request. For more information, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Centering Prayer

For students, faculty, parents, empty nesters seeking ways to keep themselves centered amidst the chaos of a hectic life and demanding academic schedule we offer Centering Prayer — 20 minutes of silence and centering, then 10-15 minutes of Lectio Divina.
